The upcoming public listing of Anthropic is set to trigger a financial windfall for its investors, with the AI company expected to go public this year at a valuation reaching as high as $2 trillion. Even before the official stock exchange debut, the stakes held by venture capital firms and early backers are already worth billions of dollars. According to data from Bloomberg, these holdings are valued based on the company’s most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, a figure that underscores the rapid appreciation of the leading AI lab’s equity.
The timeline of Anthropic’s growth has been steep, transforming a startup valued at less than half a billion dollars into a multi-trillion dollar prospect in just a few years. In 2021, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt invested in the company’s Series A round when its valuation stood at $461 million. That early move has resulted in Schmidt currently holding approximately 1% of the company, a stake that is now worth nearly $10 billion at the current private valuation. This early entry point highlights the significant upside available to those who backed the company during its initial stages.
Later-stage investors have also seen substantial returns, though their entry valuations were considerably higher. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year when the company was already valued at $183 billion. That massive late-stage bet has since grown to a value of $17 billion and could potentially double if the IPO proceeds as anticipated. Similarly, Menlo Ventures, which led the company’s Series D, has invested more than $1 billion over time. Their accumulated stake is now valued at $14 billion, reflecting the sustained confidence of major institutional players in the AI sector.
More recent entrants have also capitalized on the company’s momentum. Sequoia, a renowned venture capital firm, first backed Anthropic only earlier this year, entering when the valuation had already climbed to $380 billion. Their $3 billion investment secured roughly 1% ownership, meaning the firm has already more than doubled its initial investment in a short period. This rapid appreciation demonstrates how even late-stage entries can yield significant returns in the high-growth AI market.
Other notable backers include Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher. The firm initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round and has since added another $400 million to their position. Although Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new firm, the company’s stake in Anthropic is now worth billions. This example illustrates the diverse mix of investors, from traditional VCs to celebrity-founded funds, participating in the AI boom.
Perhaps the most dramatic increase in value belongs to Spark Capital, the only venture capital firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million in the same 2023 Series C round when the company was valued at just $5 billion. That position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold to a current value of $7 billion. This exponential growth underscores the extraordinary returns available to those who held positions from the lower valuation tiers.
As the IPO date approaches, the financial landscape for these backers will shift from private market valuations to public market performance. While the current figures represent private market prices, the potential for further gains remains if the public listing matches or exceeds the projected $2 trillion valuation. For Texas and South Central readers interested in tech investing, these figures highlight the high stakes and high rewards associated with the leading players in artificial intelligence.
