Anthropic Launches Claude Duet, Aiming to Automate Business Tasks
The new application targets professionals and small firms, distinguishing itself from personal assistants by focusing on data-driven workflows and background task execution.

The landscape of artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming crowded with new tools designed to manage daily productivity, with fresh competitors appearing on a weekly basis. On October 22, 2026, Anthropic introduced Claude Duet, a new mobile and web application intended to capture a specific segment of this expanding market. The launch positions the company against a growing list of rivals, including Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo, as the industry shifts its focus from simple chatbots to more autonomous agents.
Anthropic is positioning Duet specifically for professionals and small business owners rather than the general consumer. The company explicitly differentiates the product from personal agents like Instinct, noting that Duet is not designed to handle casual errands such as booking tickets or displaying live browser activity to the user. Instead, the tool focuses on structured business functions, such as generating daily briefings, constructing custom dashboards, and suggesting next steps based on an analysis of the user’s existing data.
The operational model of Duet allows it to execute tasks in the background within a dedicated virtual environment. This enables the user to continue working on other matters while the agent processes information. If the agent encounters a decision point that requires human input, it will pause and seek approval before proceeding. This approach aligns with a broader industry trend where major players are pivoting toward business-centric applications, even as some, like Meta, maintain a dual focus on both personal and small-business use cases.
Under the hood, Duet is powered by the Claude Opus 5.5 model. It offers extensive connectivity through more than 6,000 available connectors and plugins within the Claude Marketplace. The agent is also capable of executing online purchases on behalf of the user, utilizing digital wallets such as Stripe’s Link or Shopify’s Shop Pay. However, Anthropic has set clear boundaries on the agent's financial authority; it can process payments but is not authorized to trade securities or transfer funds between different bank accounts.
Security and privacy remain central concerns as these agents gain access to sensitive data. To address this, Anthropic has introduced a new classifier that scans every message to prevent the leakage of confidential information. By default, the system is programmed to decline requests that ask for credit card numbers or government-issued identification documents. Additionally, any sensitive actions, particularly those involving payments, are flagged to require explicit user consent before completion.
Despite these technical capabilities, the rollout is currently limited. Claude Duet is available on iOS and Android devices, as well as through the web interface at Claude.ai. Access is restricted to Pro and Max subscribers who are currently in a research preview phase. Users interested in testing the platform must join a waitlist, indicating that the company is still calibrating the experience before a wider release.
The introduction of Duet highlights the intensifying competition in the AI agent space. While the company has outlined specific features and safety protocols, the long-term effectiveness of these background agents in a professional setting remains to be seen. As the market continues to evolve, the distinction between personal and business-focused AI tools may become less clear, forcing companies to refine their value propositions for skeptical business users.
